Postbaccalaureate Pre-Medical & Pre-Health Professions Program

The Postbaccalaureate Pre-Medical & Pre-Health Professions Program offers students who already have undergraduate degrees with the opportunity to take prerequisite courses for medical, nursing, dental, veterinary schools, and physician assistant, physical therapy, occupational therapy, or other graduate programs*.

This program is designed for students who require all or some of the prerequisite courses for health-related schools and graduate programs. The duration of the program depends on a student’s individual goals. The program consists of a minimum of 22 credits in health-related courses, with up to four transfer credits accepted from work completed at another institution. Additional credits may be required for application to specific target programs. Students who complete a minimum of 22 credit hours (with up to four transfer credits) receive a letter that acknowledges their completion of the program. Students who meet certain eligibility requirements (including requirements related to the minimum number of credits, the minimum GPA, and all course prerequisites for their target graduate program) receive a holistic academic evaluation, based on a transcript analysis and graduate program readiness evaluations completed by faculty members. Additional letters of recommendation may also be provided at the discretion of a student’s instructors. All students enrolled in the program are provided the same one-on-one advising, tutoring, academic support, and professional mentoring that comes with a Johnson & Wales University education.

Upon completion of this program, graduates are expected to:

  • Demonstrate readiness to pursue health-related graduate education.  

*Two semester organic chemistry courses that satisfy prerequisite requirements for medical, dental, veterinary and pharmacy school are only offered at the Providence Campus.

NOTES: 
The Postbaccalaureate Pre-Medical & Pre-Health Professions Program offers undergraduate college preparatory coursework. Students interested in financial aid for this program must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as a fifth-year undergraduate. Aid eligibility is limited to Federal Direct Student Loans for a single consecutive 12-month period over the student’s lifetime. The majority of pre-medical and pre-health prerequisite courses are not currently offered at JWU during the summer semester. Students must enroll in at least six credit hours per semester to be considered for any financial aid. Only necessary prerequisite courses are aid-eligible; courses taken to improve GPA are ineligible. Students should reach out to their student financial planning counselor for additional information.

Students who do not need to complete the full program may take only the courses they need as extension students.
